Point of View

mixture of a narrative and essay, 1st Person narrator, autobiographical story.

Characters

police officer - anonymous narrator, young, is harassed by the Burmese, hatred of imperialism, frustrated, fears shooting the elefant, fear of ridicule by the natives. Burmese (crowd) - hates the opressors, want to have a funny incident, are depended on the whities, easy to entertain, speak with only one voice. Elefant - dangerous (at the beginning), calm (later), symbol of the dying empire, tries to break the tyranny of the white man.

Plot

Exposition - The police officer shows the situation in Burma. Conflict/Rising action - The elefant destroys the town. Climax - The decision to kill the elefant Resolution - The police officer shoots the elefant, who dies a slow and paintful dead.
